The Benefits of Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy: Relief and Support for Prairie Village Moms
Whether it’s your first or fourth child chiropractic care is very beneficial for moms-to-be. After 20 years of working with pregnant women, I have seen first hand how important chiropractic care is for relief of common symptoms but also supporting moms through this unique time in their (and their baby’s) life. As a mom of 2, I got to experience the benefits which further strengthened my belief that every expecting mother should be under routine care.
What type of symptoms does a prenatal chiropractor help with?
Lower and middle pain
Sciatica
Hip pain
Round ligament pain
Tailbone pain
Pelvic/SI joint pain
Neck pain
Shoulder pain
Rib pain
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (numbness in the hands)
Headaches
Fatigue
Constipation
Our pregnant moms experience relief with so many of these common aches and pains. Besides pain relief the following are common reasons that women seek care:
Decreased labor times/ease of labor
Help with babies turning/malpositioning (Webster’s Technique)
Generalized support: imagine having another doctor in addition to your Ob-Gyn or midwife that can answer all those questions that you have. Another person who will listen to your fears or concerns (especially if you’re a first time mom) or thinks about the emotional transition of adding another child.
To help with the post-natal/after delivery aches/pains/emotional concerns
FAQs:
Do I have to have a referral to see a prenatal chiropractor?
No. You can self refer to our office. We do work closely with many Ob-Gyns and midwives in Kansas City and are frequently referred to for patients that live in Prairie Village and Leawood
When I should start care?
As soon as possible. The earlier in the pregnancy the better. Although we can get pain relief in the 3rd trimester (and it’s so worth it!), the better aligned the mom is earlier in the pregnancy means her body and our care will help her adapt to weight gains/changes instead of trying to “fix things” when the hormones have stretched things out:) This is especially true after the first pregnancy. Most women will note in their second pregnancy, for example, that the experienced symptoms much sooner into pregnancy than they did the first. I tell all my moms to expect that “anything they experienced in the first pregnancy will be bumped up about 3 months”.
Is it safe?
Absolutely. Chiropractic adjustments are safe and effective during pregnancy and all patients are given different options for their actual care (chiropractic adjustment) such as Activator (instrument) or manual (traditional hands on) adjusting. I am proud to have received formal training and certification from the ICPA (International Chiropractic Pediatric Association) which provided more pregnancy specific education beyond traditional chiropractic school. I also work very closely with your team and will always refer back as necessary.
